Boston Scores Receives $250,000 Catalyst Gift from Wellington Management Foundation

September 21, 2023

Boston Scores is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $250,000 Catalyst Gift from the Wellington Management Foundation. The grant will be paid out over three years and will be instrumental in helping Boston Scores establish its new Coach-Mentor Training Institute.

The Coach-Mentor Training Institute is one of the pillars of the current Boston Scores strategic plan, which also includes the creation of a new education and recreation facility in East Boston set to fully open in 2024 and doubling the number of students served by 2026. The Institute will launch during the 2023-24 academic year with a focus on Boston Scores coaches and will expand in future years to support other nonprofit sports-based youth development organizations.

“This Catalyst Gift from the Wellington Management Foundation is a game changer for us,” said John Maconga, Executive Director of Boston Scores. “Coaches are an instrumental part of our work to close the opportunity gap, and through this new coaching institute we will be able to improve and expand coaching capacity and better meet the needs of our diverse student population. The institute will collaborate with youth development training specialists to train coaches on topics such as trauma-informed coaching, social-emotional learning, gender identity and LGBTQ+ inclusion.”

“We are delighted to deepen our support for Boston Scores through this Catalyst Gift,” said Karen Pfefferle, Executive Director of the Wellington Management Foundation. “This grant will help Boston Scores leverage their new facility to solidify existing programs across the city and to build-out the pool of coaches, allowing the organization to serve substantially more youth in the years ahead.”

This gift from the Wellington Management Foundation enables Boston Scores to create a new Director of Coach Training position dedicated to leading the important work of the Coach-Mentor Training Institute. Boston Scores is pleased to announce that Senior Program Manager Allison Pires has been promoted to this new role. Allison, a life-long soccer player, has worked with Boston Scores for over five years. She holds a Master’s in Public Health from Northeastern University and coached the varsity girls’ soccer team at Medford High School.
