Boston Scores received an Every Child Scholarship from ThinkGive, a non-profit organization that promotes emotional well-being in K-8 youth. Through this scholarship, Boston Scores is able to bring ThinkGive’s social and emotional learning (SEL) programming to our students at no cost. ThinkGive’s programs empower youth to take actions that positively impact themselves and others; building character, confidence, and connection. ThinkGive students overwhelmingly report strong increases in feelings of belonging, self-esteem, connection, and empowerment.
“ThinkGive’s programming aligns with and supports our civic engagement curriculum, so we were excited to incorporate it into our Summer Learning Academy,” said Ive Mendoza, Chief Program Officer at Boston Scores. “The lessons were easily adaptable and scaffolded as the groups continued to get to know each other and their community.”
Boston Scores incorporated ThinkGive programming into our 5-week Summer Learning Academy, and students explored themes of inclusion, identity, empathy and equity. Some thoughts that students shared after the program:
- “Another thing that I learned was that even kids can speak up for unfair things or actions.”
- “Two things I will plan to do differently after participating in ThinkGive is to treat people with more kindness and speak up. Also, I will lend my voice and help my community by picking trash up.”
- “I am better at seeing things from other people’s points of view.”
- “I feel empowered that I can make a positive impact on my world (myself, others, my class, school, other communities).”
The need for programs like ThinkGive is stronger than ever because youth mental health has deteriorated nationwide. In May 2023, the Surgeon General declared loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection a new public health epidemic in the United States.
“One of ThinkGive’s top strategic priorities is to expand access to our programming so that every student can access the SEL needed to develop their whole selves and promote emotional well-being,” said Penny Austen, Executive Director of ThinkGive. “We are delighted to partner with Boston Scores to bring ThinkGive to their community.”
